Quit smoking and drinking alcohol
Smoking and drinking alcohol can cause complications after your surgery.
• Quit smoking and drinking alcohol at least 2 weeks before surgery.

Eat a lot and eat right
Your body needs nutrients and energy to recover from surgery. You must continue to eat a lot before surgery.
• Your doctor may also give you a dietary supplement (ONS) to take 1-2 weeks before surgery.

Stay active
If you are used to exercising, keep doing it.
If not, start adding exercise to your daily activities.
• A simple exercise like walking for 15-30 minutes is better than not exercising at all. By staying active, you may be able to return to normal activities faster after surgery.
• Perform incentive spirometry at home as taught by a physiotherapist.
